DANIEL BOONE Weekly Report 19 Aug - 25 Aug 67 (U)

1. (TS) HIGHLIGHTS:

One RT mission was conducted during the reporting period; however, it did not enter Cambodia. The launch of one RT was postponed indefinitely because of a reported ICC visit near the target in the Se San are of Cambodia.

2. (TS) Operation Summary:

a. RT MANE landed in RVN in the vicinity of target ZULU- ?? at YA599491 on 2309..Z Aug 67. The following morning the RT moved to YA594489 where they ... nine bunkers. On 230300Z Aug 67, the RT observed an abandoned camp site atYA597... This camp site was four to six months old and could accommodate approximately 50 people. On 230900Z Aug 67, at YA588482, voices of approximately seven personnel were heard. The language spoken could not be identified, however, several Montagnard's were talking in a separate conversation within the same group. This group, estimated to be a total of 15 personnel, moved to within 20 meters of the RT, at the same time two VC/NVA were armed with AK-47 rifles and dressed in light blue uniforms. Shortly after spotting the VC/NVA, three single rifle shots were heard followed by single shots heard from four different locations. Yelling could be heard from the direction of the four shots. The US RT leader directed an air strike on the enemy locations, withdrew to the north and was extracted from RVN at YA588485 on 231222Z Aug 67. There were two TAC air sorties flown in support of this operation with unknown results.

b. The launch of RT LEVEL on target WHISKEY-50 was postponed indefinitely. Notification was received...that the ICC planned to visit the Se San area in the vicinity of the target in Cambodia. The purpose of their visit was to conduct an investigation of alleged rocket sites in the southern portion of Se San area. Since target WHISKY-50 is within four kilometers of the northern edge of the Se San area, launch of an RT was postponed to preclude detection of DANIEL BOONE operations by the ICC.

a. RT NAIL landed in RVN in the vicinity of SIERRA-50 at YA559510 on 030730Z Oct 67. The RT observed 20 large emplacements at YA5611514. This area is large enough to accommodate a company size unit. AT YA557524 the RT heard 12 to 15 personnel moving along a trail at YA556535. The personnel were speaking an unidentified language that one of the Vietnamese team members believed to be French. The following day the RT observed three VC/NVA personnel moving down the same trail, wearing fatigues, low crown pith helmets, packs and armed with AK-47 rifles. All of their clothing appeared to be new including their web gear. They spoke the same language as the personnel heard the previous day. One of the US RT members became ill so the RT moved to YA565532 and was extracted from that location, in RVN, on 050720Z Oct 67. The RT did enter Cambodia but failed to reach the target area. This target will be rescheduled at a later date.

b. RT AWL landed in RVN in the vicinity of target LIMA-50 at YA723995 on 060315Z Oct 67. Within twenty meters of the LZ the RT made contact with VC/NVA soldiers. They immediately opened fire, killing one soldier and wounding another. There was estimated to be a 15 man force in the immediate area. The RT requested air strikes and emergency extraction. The enemy fired automatic and semi-automatic weapons fire at aircraft during the air strike. The RT recovered an AK-47 rifle and a rucksack of the dead enemy. The RT was extracted at YA723995 in RVN on 060430Z Oct 67. Their were six TAC Air sorties and four helicopter gunship sorties flown in RVN in the vicinity of YA723995 with seven enemy KBA. The RT did not enter Cambodia. An attempt will be made to recon target LIMA-50 at a later date. (Note: There is a hand written notation by this summary: “Team report does not support this summary.”

c. RT PLANE landed in RVN in the vicinity of target UNIFORM-50 at YB730140 on 070655Z Oct 67. The RT observed fresh footprints made by one man traveling from northwest to southeast. As the RT moved away from the LZ they heard the sounds of bamboo being broken and underbrush being disturbed by someone moving. The RT moved northwest during which time the sounds of bamboo being broken and sound of movement continued. The RT felt the team had been compromised and was being followed. Therefore he requested extraction. The RT moved back to the LZ which it was extracted from RVN at YA730140 on 071120Z Oct 67. As the last RT member boarded the aircraft 14-20 rounds of semi-automatic weapons fire were directed at the RT members and the extraction helicopter. There were two helicopter gunship sorties flown in support of this operation with unknown results. The RT did not enter Cambodia. This target will be rescheduled at a later date.
